”My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some darker people, or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America. And shoot them for what? They never called me nigger, they never lynched me, they didn’t put no dogs on me, they didn’t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father. Shoot them for what? How can I shoot them poor people? Just take me to jail.”
- Muhammad Ali on the Vietnam War-Draft
I live by this now
I love how upset this made people. He had a speech in front of a predominantly white male college student crowd and they all were shocked at how Ali wasn’t going to participate in that mess called the Vietnam War.
I wish we had more public black figures like him. Even when they took his money this man wasn’t going to bend for them. Nowadays more black celebrities would rather keep their mouths shut for the money or even say ridiculous stuff against black people to please white folks and to maintain the appeal.
